Accelerating mangos, mangosteens, and other exotic fruit exports to Australia and/or third markets from East Java through an approved irradiation facility
November 2023 – August 2024
Katalis will provide a facility assessment and staff training to East Java’s irradiation facility, PT. Energi Sterila Higiena (STERINA), to support its registration as an Australian offshore irradiation treatment provider for mangos, mangosteens, and potentially other fresh horticultural produce. The irradiation of fruit for pest control presents an opportunity for Indonesian mangosteen exporters to access the Australian market, serving as a viable alternative to methyl bromide fumigation, which is known to adversely impact the fruit’s already limited shelf life.
This initiative by Katalis has the potential to expedite mangosteen exports from East Java and neighbouring provinces to Australia and other high-value export markets. Moreover, it may positively impact the export of various fruits currently constrained by the mandatory methyl bromide treatment. Katalis will contract a service provider to review STERINA’s facility and produce a technical report advising the steps required for them to comply with Australian irradiation regulations. The service provider will also develop and conduct training for STERINA’s staff.
